Disability Insurance

A disability exists when you can not exercise your previous or another job. From the statutory pension insurance you will receive a pension for reduced earning capacity only in this case. On the other hand, a solid occupational disability insurance will pay off if you become 50% unfit for work. You pay a pension the amount of which you have previously determined. Nonetheless, disability insurance can provide some people with an alternative to occupational disability protection.

Inability to work, loss of earning capacity and disability – these are the differences

Basically, you have to distinguish between a disability, loss of earning capacity and occupational disability. The statutory pension insurance, for example, only provides financial support in the form of a monthly pension, if the person affected is disabled or incapacitated for work. This means that further professional activity is not possible due to illness, accident or mental health problems (incapacity to work) or only to a limited extent (reduced earning capacity). On the other hand, occupational disability already exists if permanent incapacity for work applies only to the previously practiced occupation.

Protection against disability as an alternative to the BU – test of the financial test

The consumer magazine Finanztest, which belongs to Stiftung Warentest, has examined alternatives to occupational disability insurance (Finanztest issue 7/2012). The protection against disability was also mentioned. Compared to occupational disability insurance, however, the hedging variant only offers benefits for certain groups of persons in the form of a monthly pension.

Thus, the insurance against disability can be useful if you are in education or studying and therefore may not yet be able to insure a specific occupation. As a rule, you can later convert the insurance into a disability insurance. In addition, the disability insurance is very cheap. Also for housewives and other people with an unpaid activity, as well as self-employed, the employees employ, insurance against disability can be useful. Artists and people in another “uninsurable” profession can also take out disability insurance as an alternative to protection against occupational disability. Disability insurance, however, offers much more comprehensive benefits and it also works earlier. Therefore, one should only resort to a disability policy if, for example, due to previous illnesses, there must be a rejection.

The only general benefit of disability insurance is the low contribution. However, if you are still able to work in another occupation, you will not receive any payment from the insurance. An occupational disability policy is therefore more advantageous.

If pre-existing illnesses are detected during the health examination, the insurer may offer you the option of not including the corresponding illnesses in the insurance cover by means of an exclusion of benefits. Although you can sometimes save contributions, but then you become disabled due to these diseases, you will receive no benefits.

Disability insurance without health check

With the occupational disability insurance the offerers demand the answering of health questions around the occupational disability risk better to be able to estimate. An insurance without health check is hardly possible. The situation is similar with the disability cover, but here are the questions sometimes less extensive, and it is not possible with certain pre-existing diseases to complete a BU policy, but a disability insurance.

Comparison of different offers

If disability insurance or disability insurance is out of the question for you, you should be fully informed about alternatives. In addition to disability insurance, there are also alternatives such as private accident insurance or serious illness insurance (dread disease protection), which can be used to hedge partial risks. In any case, a consultation with one of our experts is worthwhile. This can help you to find the optimal insurance solution even under special circumstances. Editorial Tip

The self-employed who employ employees can delegate many of their tasks to them. Many insurance companies therefore pay for the self-employed only when a disability has occurred. It is therefore worthwhile for self-employed persons to check which of the two variants is most advantageous. The disability cover can sometimes save premiums.
